Liberation Entertainment takes rights to film triptych
CANNES -- Liberation Entertainment has snatched up North American rights to "Tokyo!," the film triptych from all-star directors Michel Gondry, Leos Carax and Joon-ho Bong.
The three short pics take on the Japanese metropolis through the lenses of the three auteurs. "Tokyo!" had its world premiere in the Un Certain Regard section, and will be released by Liberation in theaters later this year.
Carax's segment, titled "Merde," focuses on a man who engages in provocative acts on the streets of Tokyo. Bong helmed "Shaking Tokyo," about a recluse who falls in love during an earthquake. Gondry's "Interior Design" is a fable that centers on a couple drifting apart.
Movie follows the trend of "Paris, J'taime" and the upcoming "New York, I Love You," both of which package shorts from a diverse group of directors whose films are shot and set in, and reflect different aspects, of a particular city.
Los Angeles and London-based Liberation launched in 2006 but has only recently ramped up its theatrical distribution arm. The company picked up the soccer docu "Kickin It" in a deal with ESPN and Netflix's Red Envelope Entertainment around the time of its January Sundance premiere.
Liberation's Rob Williams negotiated the deal with Wild Bunch's Laurent Baudens.
